"Public Secret: Not Oxymoron," says ACLU

The American Civil Liberties Union expressed disappointment at the closed-door hearing held today by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on the warrantless spying by the National Security Agency. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and General Michael Hayden, the deputy director of national intelligence, are expected to testify. The hearing coincides with revelations that the head of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) was warned that information illegally obtained by NSA may have been used to obtain wiretap warrants.

"Our democratic system relies on transparency and candor from the executive, and so far, we have seen neither," said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. "The White House was quick to defend the program, but when pressed for the facts, it has refused to provide them. Congress must conduct oversight and let the American public know the answers to the critical questions surrounding this illegal program. An aggressive public relations campaign and secret hearings cannot restore the public's confidence."

Um, what part of SECRET doesn't the ACLU understand? Why would the ACLU want details of the Classified program made public? The amount of information already leaked has impeded its purpose. The CIA is doing its own investigation into who leaked this, and other, classified information to the press. The Head of the CIA has said it has hurt its ability to do its job. Does the ACLU have some kind of sympathy for terrorists? Well, their behavior sure makes me think they do have sympathy for terrorists. Frankly, they seem, to me, to be working for al-Qaeda! Who knows, maybe Usama has them on retainer! Ring ring, oh crap it's the hotline! Yes Usama? I would like you to find out some more damaging information about America. The movement is a bit slow and we need to get the masses worked up again. Uh, OK Usama, how about some more GITMO pictures? Oh, that would be wonderful! Allah be praised, you will certainly get many, many Virgins in heaven. We are very greatful to our allies at the Allah Cabal liberation Union…

They defend Terrorists, GITMO detainees, pedophiles, and file for inflammatory information under FOIA that it makes public. They also take out full page political ads, and all on our taxpayer dime! It seems to me that the ACLU is fighting against everything that is American.

Thoughtful Readers Speak:
Yes, even suspects and criminals have rights. People are innocent until proven guilty in this country. Suspects also have the right to trial by jury and the right to not be held without trial or without representation for long periods of time. The purpose of the ACLU is to make sure those rights are available to EVERYBODY, not just the people you approve of. Just because somebody is suspected of being a terrorist or suspected of having information regarding terrorism does NOT mean they can have their rights stripped from them. Do I like terrorists? No. But I'm not such a coward that I'm willing to give up my rights for a little safety.

Illegal programs, by definition, can't be classified. Illegal actions by government officials are by definition public information.

"Taxpayer dime"? What exactly are you talking about? The ACLU is funded by private donations.

You'd think.

United States Code section 1988 that requires taxpayers to pay attorneys in civil rights cases.

Actually, the ACLU was founded by Chuck Norris after he traveled back in time to help us win the Revolutionary War. In fact, Pluto isn't a planet, it's a group of British soldiers that he roundhouse kicked into outer space.

We bow to your superior intellect O, wise erica.

Roger Baldwin and Crystal Eastman founded the ACLU in 1920 along with three other organizations dedicated to the most leftist of causes. The histories of these two individuals belie their claims of patriotism and respect for the Constitution.

Baldwin openly sought the utter destruction of American society. Fifteen years after the founding of the ACLU, Baldwin wrote:

I am for Socialism, disarmament and ultimately, for the abolishing of the State itself … I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal(cite).

That doesn't support your assertion. You said "all on the taxpayer dime"; not "some on the taxpayer dime."

Care to try again?
