Mayor Ray Nagin, the Prophet

Mayor Ray Nagin, arguably the nation's most well-known mayor, has now concluded that God is mad at America:
"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country,"
Why, you may ask is God mad? Is it because we kill 4,000 babies per day? we have started sanctioning sins of unbelief? or maybe because we've allowed the ACLU to establish our morality instead of Him? No. None of those reasons--it's because of George W. Bush: "Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses."

If he isn't getting blamed for starting the hurricanes through his environmental policies, he's getting blamed because of God's divine anger toward him.

Take heart George, Prophet Nagin then added, "But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves," ...taking care of ourselves, huh? Nagin's message of self-reliance, while contrary to Biblical teaching, was given during a Martin Luther King memorial service.(cite)

Thoughtful Readers Speak:
Christians have a responsibility to love and care for those in times of crisis by providing for their immediate need of food, shelter, clothing, or even education--similar to what millions of Christians did in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. But, if an individual consistently demonstrates their unwillingess to change their lifestyle and if they continue to enjoy their status as victims instead of taking responsiblity for their lot in life, then they are choosing to continue the lifestyle of homelessness--if they don't work, they don't eat.

So, what you're saying is that your own stance - that the homeless need to rely on their own initiative, and not charity - is anti-Biblical?

Or is it simply that you won't pass up any opportunity to rag on the targets that the RNC sets up for you?

I think God looks at the self-reliant person with sadness; He want's people to rely on Him.

But, relying on Him and being willing to put forth the effort to work are not juxtaposed propositions.

Come on, you know better than that.

TRACKBACK! That city of sin that God recently destroyed by flood, New Orleans, is trying for a comeback, led by loonie Mayor "Brother" Ray Nagin: "As we think about rebuilding New Orleans, surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country." (Capital Region People)

My best friend is a good person. He's worked hard his entire life, he's married to a good woman, yadda yadda. Why did he deserve to be driven from his home in New Orleans? Your god is a real piece of work, you know that?

But, relying on Him and being willing to put forth the effort to work are not juxtaposed propositions.

Apparently Christianity is a kind of Orwellian double-speak, because this makes no sense. How can one rely on God and yet work from their own initiative? Isn't it the very definition of "relying on someone" that you surrender the initiative to them?
