Mrs. Alito Loves Her Husband

There was never a wife more proud of her husband than Mrs. Alito was on Monday. Sitting directly behind him, she was beaming with pride and was most certainly a source of encouragement and strength to her husband.

Once the hearings started and Senators Kennedy, Durbin, Biden, Feinstein, Feingold, and Leahy began to rail against her husband in a politically motivated display of angst toward him, the thoughts and feelings that have been swirling around in her head built an emotional pressure that released last night. As Senator Lindsey Graham apologized for the other Senator's behavior and praised him for engendering the support of so many of his colleagues, "Finally," she thought, "finally someone understands my husband's many wonderful attributes."

In a rare display of love and compassion on Capitol Hill, Mrs. Alito could no longer hold back those feelings. She was compelled to leave the room in tears.

A display like this could not have been planned. In fact, she is probably humiliated this morning as she reads headlines worldwide. But I say, "Mrs. Alito be proud that the world knows how much you love your husband."

Thoughtful Readers Speak:
I don't understand why self-described "conservatives" are so excited about a SCOTUS nominee who favors almost unchecked powers for the executive during an indefinite situation of "war."

Certainly your analysis is correct; I mean, doesn't everyone prefer a dictatorship even when they are not the dictator?

First, Chet, Alito doesn't; your listening to your own propaganda. Alito believes in the quaint theory that attempts by Congress to legislate away authority the Constitution specifically gives the President are unconstitutional. Your characterization of Alito's position is silly.

But it should be noted that Abraham Lincoln suspended habeus corpus in wartime. Part of the reason for the controversy over Mr. Bush's actions- an entirely seperate question than Alito, BTW, despite Teddy's attempts to conflate them- is that conservatives live in the real world, where bad guys can take away all of our rights, and that we think that this should be avoided if possible.

We don't have the luxury of living in a dream world of our own creation, like you guys do.

The Civil War and Gulf War #2 are not even comparable. Lincoln and Bush are not even comparable. Unless, of course, you live in a dream world of your own making.

In fact, Bob, that's the opinion of several conservative legal minds that I respect.

Part of the reason for the controversy over Mr. Bush's actions- an entirely seperate question than Alito, BTW, despite Teddy's attempts to conflate them- is that conservatives live in the real world, where bad guys can take away all of our rights, and that we think that this should be avoided if possible.

What makes you think this isn't true? And for that matter, why do you believe a terrorist has the ability to take away your rights? Certainly a terrorist can kill you, but that's true of a murderer, too. Do you advocate that police be completely unrestrained in the prosecution and investigation of criminal acts?
