What's Your Gender? I'm a Boy, Girl, or "I don't know"

That's what Barbie was asking it's kid website readers. Though they have now changed their poll, the Concerned Women for America first pointed this out as a potential ploy to the transgender movement. Barbie responded that this was a simply a neutral third option for younger readers.

Younger readers, old enough to use the internet, don't know whether they are a boy or a girl? Hmmm...sounds fishy. They now changed it to, "I don't know what to say." Hmm...frankly, this make it more suspicious. A child old enough to read that phrase, doesn't know what to say when asked their opinion--that's a first. And, really, is that a less controversial statement?

Kudos to CWA for being vigilant.

Thoughtful Readers Speak:
OK, time for a quick reality check.
Common web practice is to create all drop-downs/radio buttons/choices of any kind with a safety option, a "I don't know what to say or don't want to, but I want to continue." All good web sites do this, especially corporate ones, as they don't want to be accused of pressuring people for information. As there are legal issues with web site use by children under 13, the concern over pressure is even greater. So all decision points on a web site, even simple choices like gender or age, have an escape option so the user can continue withot revealing anything they don't want to.
So someone most likely used the standard "I don't know" and didn't stop to think about the specifics of the situation. Now, it has been accurately phrased to "I don't know what to say."
Anti-kudos to CWA for turning something they don't understand about web site creation into a conspiracy.

Good point...anti-kudos?

Come to think of it, Barbie and Ken are "I don't know" since they don't actually have any parts :D
