Why I am a Christian

As I have considered this question and sat down to respond, I have thought about all of the evidences, philosophical proofs, testimonies of faith, and arguments for accepting Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior. But let me first slice through those and come to root issue: I’m guilty.

Look around to cultures worldwide and you’ll see a pattern of morality. While it is hard to imagine an isolated culture today, it was not too long ago that cultural separation was a reality for much of the world; yet, flowing through each culture was a written or unwritten code of moral rightness. These codes were not identical, but they were similar. What is this right-ness that societies seek to maintain? Where did this wrong-ness come from?

This similarity speaks of a Creator. While varieties of hair, eye, and skin color exist, moral truth has been universally written upon the heart of humanity: greed, jealousy, and murder are universally bad; love, patience, and kindness are universally good.

When I do wrong, what is this guilt that I feel? Whose standard have I transgressed? And, from whom can I seek pardon? Why does my heart condemn me? I have broken the standard that has been written on my heart and I walk around seeking to assuage my soul.

But, no system of humanism or pantheism offers any way to deal with this guilt that I know exists when I transgress that which is written upon the programming of my heart. No other religion provides any confidence of forgiveness and mercy. None remove this feeling or offer hope for my guilty soul except Jesus Christ.

Christians often talk about accepting Jesus Christ as Savior. That’s confusing language for the thoughtful person and is reminiscent of a blind leap of faith. Guilt is real. Forgiveness for guilt is also real but it can only come from the creator, whose programming we have violated.

Our transgression of rightness requires our death because God’s character can not tolerate wrong-ness. BUT, when Jesus Christ died, He took my punishment that belonged to me for my wrong-ness. God’s wrath for my wrong-ness was poured out on Jesus Christ instead of me—because He loves me. Now, I can have hope.

So, answer number one to why I am a Christian: I know my guilt, and it is real. Who else could offer forgiveness except the one whose standard I have transgressed? God took the penalty of my sin and placed it onto Jesus Christ that I might live and enjoy relationship with Him.

Thoughtful Readers Speak:
Clearly you've never done anything really wrong, anything that you really hate yourself for. If you had, you would see that the forgiveness offered by your god is cheap and hollow. The only forgiveness worth anything is the forgiveness of those you've wronged. And once you've obtained that, maybe then you might be able to forgive yourself. But there is no satisfaction, no redemption, nothing worthwile in the easy way out offered by Christianity. I suppose it might make you feel better, if you're exceptionally shallow and stupid, but that's about all it does.

Here's 'Why I'm not a Christian' (George Bernard Shaw). .....Because it's all a load of crap, that's why.

I'm not here to attack your faith like some others who have commented, even though I am strongly opposed to organised religion. My comment is in regards to talk on your site of "Christmas" being replaced with "Holidays". You are aware that the holiday gift-giving season was celebrated long before Jesus Christ, are you not?

Either way, you will enjoy the new pictures of my first child I have posted.

"Forgiveness for guilt" does not exist. Guilt is not sin. Forgiveness for sin does exist, which indirectly causes the guilt to cease.

Now you have me thinking about why I am a Christian... I am a Christian because Jesus is the Lord of all. He has freed me from slavery to sin, and allowed me to live in the light. He has saved my life, and for that I am forever in debt.

Excellent thought provoking post.

I just posted this in our FBF Blog area today and I would like to share this here as well...

The best way for me to start off with my comment is with the Lords Prayer.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors, and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Matthew 6:9-13

"hallowed be Thy name." This name is Jahh Hayah is means I AM ..the name comes from two hebrew words "Jahh" meaning 'Self' or even more simply 'I' and the "Hayah" meaning 'Exist' or simply "AM" ..whcih is why Hebrews call God the "Self Existent One"....this name is never to be confused with the god "Allah" ..they are two entirely different concepts ...ok lets move on

Now as always here's my view on the prayer;

"Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

In Heaven, no one starves or is athirst

In Heaven, our debts and our debtors are forgiven

In Heaven, no one is led into temptation, all are delivered from evil

Thats all it takes for Jahh Hayah's will to be done on earth ...I'm wondering why thats so hard to do?

The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, ‘Lo, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you. Luke 17:20-21

Now I'm wondering if thats the reason why God's will hasn't been done on earth as it is in Heaven? ...I mean if people believed that the Kingdom of Jahh Hayah is within YOURSELF then there's no reason that Jahh Hayah's will cannot be done, on earth as it is in heaven!

HAS THE KINGDOM NOT COME? ..of coarse it has ..it's in YOU and I today.

But there's twist to this and I know you're wondering why no one has told you these things before but rest assured that I know now ..thats my gift to the reader!

Christ leads us in his new song...so you'll need to tune in here!
"The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit." John 3:8

But it's so soothin' to our ears within.. it no longer matters where it's going nor to whom it comes to..so long as it does, thats all thats important!

Christ said, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice. John 18:37

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. Mark 13:31

And did his words passed away?...NO WAY! ..but many things of the earth and heaven HAVE already begun to pass away!

When the earth is dying and heaven no longer recognised for what it was intened then shall they weep for them...if only they could have just look inside themselves and opened that gate!

Ask anyone and they tell ya if they are honest with themselves...

Jesus says, "He who is of God hears the words of God; the reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God." John 8:47

Do you hear the words now? ..you won't find the words in books or on the tv nor radios or the internet ..but inside ourselves, where the gate, if opened, there is a path leading to the Kingdom ..the Kingdom was and still is already there IN YOU! ...Just opened the gate and you're there!

Wishing you and yours a sweet Shanah Tovah

All the Best,

Remnant :)
